The Art OF STORYTELLING
The Art OF STORYTELLING
Across Queensland, in backyard sheds, garages, home studios, and spare rooms, everyday people are quietly making extraordinary Art.
Balancing careers, families, and daily life, these emerging artists are driven by a deep, personal need to create.
Five years ago, a simple flyer from a local artist landed in my mailbox—and planted a seed. I realised that he, like many others, could benefit from compelling visual storytelling to promote his work.
That spark led me to enrol in a 12-month mentorship program with Regional Arts Service Network to explore storytelling more deeply.
In 2022 and 2023, I teamed up with a Brisbane writer and a designer. Together, we launched the first and second editions of BACKYARD·ART·STORIES magazine.
What began as a creative idea quickly evolved into a journey of discovery—into the lives of artists, their practices, and their needs. Along the way, I’ve learned invaluable lessons about community-building, connection, and support.
But most importantly, I’ve come to understand how my own art and practice can be a powerful force for helping others—and that, for me, is the heart of this project.
